The Burlington Northern Railroad

The Burlington Northern Railroad was incorporated on March 2, 1970 after a lengthy period of legal and regulatory analysis. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Spokane, Portland and Seattle railways formed the new company and realized the vision of James J. Hill.

BN merged with the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway in late 1980. Burlington Northern continued until its merger with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1996.
