Great Northern ran many famous passenger trains, including the Empire Builder, the Western Star, the Gopher/Badger, and many others. BN continued to operate these trains until AMTRAK took over in 1971. AMTRAK then discontinued all trains except the Empire Builder (which still operates today) and the Arrowhead (the former Gopher/Badger). With the removal of the other trains GN ran, the excess passenger cars became available for resale or scrapping. A vast majority were bought by AMTRAK, with a few going to NJTransit, into MofW service, or to private owners/museums, and the rest being scrapped.
